5.3 - Water Resistant Boxes

(By Bill Pickl)
My favorite boxes are O-ring sealed PVC project boxes that can be purchased in various sizes from an electronic supply catalog, some even come with clear lids.  Using micro servos a 3.5" x 3" x 2" box can hold three servos and the receiver.  You can even attach the firing valves through the wall of the box as well as your power leads for the motors.  The best way to keep the box water tight is to pass all electrical connections through the wall of the box via a screw and bolt, since wires are hard to seal around and water can leak down the inside of the wire as well.  The key to making this easy on yourself is to remember that you only need two terminals for receiver power, one terminal per radio channel located outside of the box and a pair of power leads for the input and output of your speed control if you locate it inside your box.  Also you can save space inside your box by removing the receiver board from its box and placing only the board inside your watertight box.
